Item: THE HEART OF THE ANTARCTIC - Vol.II by E.H. SHACKLETON. 1st US edition!!! 450 uncut gilt-topped page large (25.5cm x 18cm x 5cm) heavy hardback book published by J.B. Lippincott Company 1909 (the same year as the Heinemann edition). Content: This is an extremely rare 1st US edition of The Heart of the Antarctic - Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 by E.H. Shackleton. The Heart of the Antarctic was published in two volumes; this book is volume two. Includes; An Account of the First Journey to the South Magnetic Pole by Professor T.W. Edgeworth David F.R.S. (See photos for contents pages). With an introduction by Hugh Robert Mill, D.Sc Lavishly illustrated with 6 full colour plates, 131 black & white plates, 38 illustrations within the text & 3 large fold-out maps. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton CVO, OBE (15 February 1874 – 5 January 1922) was an Anglo-Irish explorer, knighted for the achievements of the "British Antarctic Expedition" (1907 - 09) under his command, but now chiefly remembered for his Antarctic expedition of 1914–1916 in the ship Endurance, which is colloquially known as "Shackleton's Expedition" or "The Shackleton Expedition". Along with Roald Amundsen, Douglas Mawson, and Robert Falcon Scott, he was a famous and key figure in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, all being much publicised and discussed world-famous names in their day and era. Condition: Hardback good/worn condition; bumps/splits/wear to boards/corners/edges, marks. Pages Excellent condition; attached to boards along spine between front inside cover/first page only, splits along spine between front inside cover/first blank page (exposing spine webbing), ex-libris label (Denver Club) & name label attached to front inside cover, minor marks to first 3 pages/last page, very minor splits to edges of approx 5 pages, page faces very clean & bright (excellent + condition).
