"Les Gens de la Famille Chien-Dieu: Phototheque Imaginaire de Shuji Terayama," published in Japan in 1975, 152 pages, large hardcover in pictorial color dust jacket with obi band, 11.5" by 9". Text in Japanese. Utterly incredible book of photographs by Japanese avant-garde dramatist, poet and filmmaker Shuji Terayama, strikingly designed and loaded with bizarre and fascinating images. An associate of Daido Moriyama (he collaborated with him in the 60's and contributed the text to Moriyama's first book), Terayama's images distill a similar experimentalism, though with more humor and a broader and more diverse creativity, referencing early nude photography, Surrealism, Artaud, and circus sideshows, and employing various photo formats - brazen, radical, at times madcap work. The book's design is simply remarkable, unline anything else I've seen, with photos printed on pages of varying colors, brilliantly sequenced through various formats and framings - leering portraits, dark sexual fantasies, satires of Japanese cultural symbols, surreal clowning, film reels, and some recycled and reworked b & w images that evoke loss and hauntings of memory. A tour de force of both creative photographs and publishing - a book that clearly belongs in any list of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Very scace. My highest recommendation on this phenomenal book. In excellent condition save for a trace of edgewear to cover and obi strip (no tears) - really a fine, collectible copy.
